Changes for 2025

Some of these amendments are to the Fencing New Zealand specific rules and processes.

FIE Rule Changes:

The October Notification of changes to the Fencer Salute (t.1 & t.122) remain in place. The only other rule changes were corrections of spelling and formatting issues.

Maraging Sabre Blades:

For New Zealand National Competitions Maraging Sabre Blades are not required. The current standard of S2000 or later sabre blades is maintained.

It is accepted that fencers travelling to international competitions may require Maraging Blades for Sabre. Fencers need to check entry requirements.

Oceania events held in New Zealand are Zone Championships and run with full FIE rules and as such will require Maraging Sabre Blades.

Chest Protectors for Foil Fencers:

Chest protectors are required for all females and are optional for men. FIE Technical rule m25.4.c requiring an over cover will be implemented at Fencing New Zealand Competitions from 1st July 2025.  The referees will include checking for this in their ‘on Piste’ checks.

The purpose of the updated standard is to stop the false off-target calls caused when the foil tip slides across the lame and hard plastic beneath the Jacket.  To disable any attempts at manipulating the scoring the FIE have developed this solution.

Secondary Schools Rankings:

From the First of January 2025 all Secondary School results will NOT be included in the FeNZ Ranking system.

An informal complaint was received by Officiating Commission in August 2024 indicating that a fencer had noticed that Secondary School Students who were older than Cadet age range did NOT receive any ranking points, this was found to be true.

By excluding those students above Cadet age (but still able to be enrolled at Secondary School) from receiving correctly earned Ranking Points Fencing New Zealand is being inconsistent and unfair to those students.  Several options were investigated and discussed prior to the above decision being made by the FeNZ board.  It is suggested that regions may like to consider running their own ranking for Secondary school events only.
