It is great to see our fencers achieving some impressive results in the AFC2 event in Adelaide yesterday.
Following on from her win in the Australian Under 20ís earlier in the year, one of our most promising young fencers Lena Jacob took out the Under 23 Foil title. Lena beat her Australian rival Mayuri Muralidharan in the final 15 -8. Chantelle May made it two Kiwiís on the podium, losing narrowly to Muralidharan in a close semi-final. The girls fence again in the Open event on Monday.
In the Menís Open Foil, Daniel Garelja provided New Zealandís third medal of the day with a great third place finish, losing to the eventual winner Edward Fitzgerald. This is our first medal in an Australian Open event for some time and a great achievement.
Mary Black also had a good weekend, following on from a 12th place in the Women's Open Epee, she narrowly missing out on a medal in the veterans' event.
On behalf of Fencing New Zealand I would like to congratulate all our fencers and Coach Anya Kamynina whose pupils picked up the three medals.
