2015-07-31 18:12 - Commonwealth Cadet and Junior Championships, Cape Town, SA. July 2015
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZAt the recent Commonwealth Fencing Junior and Cadet Championships held in Cape Town the team had the best results of any Junior Commonwealth event NZ has attended.

We would like to wish congratulations to our outstanding achievers!

Felix Boyce, the recipient of 3 Bronze Medals, had a spectacular result, the best any individual NZ fencer has had at a Commonwealth Junior event;
Felix, seeded 19 after poules, placed 3rd= in Mens Foil going out in a hard fought semi final against Kamal Minott (ENG) losing 15-9 . Felix then got on the piste in the Mens Epee and aced his poule, seeding 3rd and reaching the semi-final to face Tomas Curran Jones (ENG) going down in a close 15-12 defeat. Thirdly, as one of the anchors of the Mens Foil Team, Felix helped the team effort to secure the Bronze medal.

Wai Ling Chan secured our next highest individual result with a stellar 5th place. Unfortunately going down the the quarter finals 15-8 against a very dynamic Elisabeth Powell (ENG) the eventual silver medalist.

Louis Jennings secured the top NZ spot in the Men's Cadet Epee. Placing 6th after defeating James Harwood (fellow kiwi who took out the 6th seed!) in the de16. Louis lost to eventual winner - Ben Schneider (ENG) 15-11.

Sheldon Ogilvie secured the 7th place spot in the Men's Cadet Epee by taking out the 2nd seed in the de16 in a nail biter 15-14. Going down the George Morris (WAL) in the qarter-final a close 15-13.

Another stand out performance was Brittany Wyatt in the Cadet Womens Epee. After a tough poule she was placed 24th and took out 9th seed 15-14. Next DE she took out 8th see 15-14. Getting through to the quarter finals and going down against the eventual silver medallist.

Mens Foil Team (Daniel Garelja, Felix Boyce, Daniel Keleghan, Nathanael Walker-Hale) all helped the effort and secured the team bronze medal. Seeding 4th they beat Scotland in a bold performance of their skill as a team. Followed by semi final defeat at the hands of the English (many lessons learned). Last up was the play off for third. A well supported victory against India lead NZ to their second consecutive Junior Mens Foil Team Medal.

There were many upsets, victories and defeats that all warrant applause and recognition. Everyone in the Team got out there and fenced their best, a special mention to the rest of the team who all made commendable personal achievements: Nicole Martin, James Harwood, Nick Henderson, Darya Kharitonova and Christine Chen.

Congratulations to the whole team on doing your country proud!
