Q. Where in the world is Varna?
Congratulations to Fencing Mid South epeeist, Mark Rance (The Fencing Institute) who placed 26th out of 73 Veteran "A" (50+) starters. The pools were strong, with mixed results everywhere. Only 4 fencers from the 11 pools managed all victories, with one, two or three defeats being the norm. Mark qualified for the DE64 33rd seed (3V-3D). In a down to the wire bout he took the victory from 32nd seed Jan Bade (Finland) 10-9. in the DE32, Mark fenced top seeded Jan Tivenios (Sweden) but was over powered 6-10.
Mark's closest ranked Commonwealth fencer was Anton Pollard (GBR) at 40th. Once again Mark, "Congratulations".
Also competing was our ex-New Zealand fencer Sarah Osvath, now fencing for Australia, who finished a commendable 9th place in the Women's Epee Veteran "A" (50+ with 36 fencers).
The individual weapon events are in veteran categories, A (50+), B (60+) and C (70+) and DE bouts are to 10 hits in 2 periods of 3 minutes. NZ does not have a team competing.
Japan's Naojiro Mitani (Men's Foil), aged just 81 and 8 months, squeaks in as the oldest competitor with several 80 year olds not far behind. Diane Austen competing for Britain in Women's Foil is the oldest women at a young 80.
We thank the Bulgarian Federation and Varna for hosting the Championships. To all competitors, officials and organisors, "we are impressed and salute you all".
