After a long illness, Bob Binning passed away in Brisbane early on Monday morning.
I am saddened by the loss and extend to his family the condolences of myself and of the fencing community in New Zealand at large with whom Bob had a long association as a fencer. He will remain forever in our record books as a National Champion (Sabre 1955, '56, '57, '59, '61, '62, '63, '66 and also Epee in 1966) , a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist (1962 Men's Sabre teams). He is a hero and legend in our sport of fencing.
Bob was generous in passing on his skills and experience. We have been enriched through his participation and are gratefull for his contribution.
Bob was active in other areas and held in high regard in his communities. He was the Drum major for his Wellington Pipe Band that returned from Scotland with glory as Champions in 1948. He was well known personality in Wellington and throughout New Zealand.
We salute Bob Binning.
