The Operations Manager will be responsible for the day to day delivery of programme administration and support services. This would be a part-time paid position. The Partnerships Manager will take the lead on fundraising and seeking sponsorship support. This is an unpaid voluntary position.

2017-04-08 15:33 - National Youth Development Programme
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZThe FeNZ Board has agreed to establish a national development programme for our Under 15, Cadet and Junior fencers.

The programme will have an initial focus on establishing a pathway to success at the next Commonwealth Cadet and Junior Fencing Champs. It will also provide the foundation for a broader national development and high performance strategy that will have a longer term outlook. Further information on the programme is available (here)

Our immediate focus is on progressing grant applications so we can fund the engagement of a part-time Director and part-time Operations Manager to support the implementation of the programme.  Once we have secured that funding we will:
Call for applications and progress those appointments as quickly as possible.
Call for nominations from fencers who want to join the programme.

In the meantime, over the next week or two, we will be:

Posting draft position descriptions for the Programme Director and Operations Managers roles so potential applicants are aware of these opportunities and we can address any initial queries about them;
Making available general guidance to fencers, parents and coaches on development pathways for young fencers
Seeking input from fencers to gauge the level of interest in the programme and in particular to better understand fencer commitment to attending targeted international competitions that form a key component of the development programme over the next three years.

Watch this space for further developments!

Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZWell... the Commonwealth Veterans Championships for 2016 have now concluded and the multitude of fencers are now dispersing to the rest of New Zealand or away to their homes.

What an outstanding event!!! Just wonderful.

A huge vote of thanks to all of the organising committee for an exceptional job well done, all the tech team, weapons control, DT, referees, helpers and keepers of things running, and of course the fencers from all over the Commonwealth.

Full results can be found on the event web site, along with an album of photographs which go some way to capturing the event - the comradeship, the sportsmanship, the style and the skill, and the very essence of veterans' fencing.

Well done to all those involved.

2016-11-15 20:55 - Commonwealth Team Selection
Posted by kylemore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZThe Commonwealth Team selection criteria is a follows

The 'A' team will consist of the two highest ranked veterans (any veteran age group) from the NZ national open rankings plus the two next best fencers from the combined pool rounds of the Commonwealth individual event.
Selection of a team captains, which do not necessarily have to be one of the team, will be made on the day with consultation of the selectors, team and team manager (William Bishop).
It is expected that other fencers will contribute teams to the 'friendly' team events

The recommendation proposed was chosen as it
recognises commitment and results through the year
creates space to respond to good performances.
doesn't tie hands around those who aren't in the ranking system for good reason but are capable of a good result

2016-06-20 22:06 - New FeNZ Board Member required
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZThe FeNZ Board needs a new member to build our compliment back up to the eight people required. This position has become available through changes at Fencing Central.

This time we are looking for a Board member who can represent our Fencing Youth. So we are looking for an active fencer who is between the ages of 18 and 24 years and who is prepared to step up to actively represent our various youth groups around the county at the National level.

We are seeking applications from fencers in that age group. Whilst this is not a formally elected position (i.e. FeNZ can simply appoint) we are going to make this a formal evaluation based on your submission.
If you are interested in applying then we require a 400 word (max) application setting out why you think you should be chosen as the Youth Rep Board Member. We are keen to understand how you would view the role of Youth representative, what ideas you have for ensuring the fencing youth are properly represented, any ideas you have for improving fencing at the Youth levels in line with our 2020 Strategy, and any special skills you would bring to the role as a full Board member.

This position would be for an initial term of 2 years.

Applications should be in written form (word doc etc.) but you may support your application with other media forms if you think this might assist your selection. Your application should be forwarded to the Secretary General of FeNZ (secretary@fencing.org.nz) by no later than 31st July 2016. Once we have shortlisted potential candidates we may seek an interview with you.

The FeNZ Board will announce its selection by 31st August and it would be expected the successful new Board member would be required attend Board meetings (by Skype) from the October 2016 meeting (normally first Sunday in month)

2016-05-05 08:59 - FeNZ Strategy 2020
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZThe purpose of this message is to announce the launch of a new Strategic Plan for fencing in New Zealand. The Strategy known as FENZ 2020 is now up and running and we are on a journey to deliver a bigger more successful and robust sporting organisation.

The strategy is exciting for all of us associated with fencing; whether an active fencer, a parent and supporter or one of our many volunteers.

There is something in it for everyone.

More details of the Strategy will be provided over the next short while either on the website or via FaceBook.
Just to highlight the major strategic objectives:
 We aim to achieve significant growth in membership sufficient to take us to 2000 active fencers by 2020
 We aim to have at least 10 NZ fencers in the top 150 FIE rankings and sustain that number.

I am sure you will agree that these are audacious targets. But “you only hit what you aim for”.

Of course achieving anything worthwhile requires lots of hard work and over the next few months you will see more evidence of the strategy being implemented and people getting involved.

If you have any questions or concerns I would be keen to hear from you directly and of course we are always looking for skills and resources and ideas.

Looking forward to working with you on the strategy implementation – let the fun begin

Ian Perry
President

2015-07-31 18:12 - Commonwealth Cadet and Junior Championships, Cape Town, SA. July 2015
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZAt the recent Commonwealth Fencing Junior and Cadet Championships held in Cape Town the team had the best results of any Junior Commonwealth event NZ has attended.

We would like to wish congratulations to our outstanding achievers!

Felix Boyce, the recipient of 3 Bronze Medals, had a spectacular result, the best any individual NZ fencer has had at a Commonwealth Junior event;
Felix, seeded 19 after poules, placed 3rd= in Mens Foil going out in a hard fought semi final against Kamal Minott (ENG) losing 15-9 . Felix then got on the piste in the Mens Epee and aced his poule, seeding 3rd and reaching the semi-final to face Tomas Curran Jones (ENG) going down in a close 15-12 defeat. Thirdly, as one of the anchors of the Mens Foil Team, Felix helped the team effort to secure the Bronze medal.

Wai Ling Chan secured our next highest individual result with a stellar 5th place. Unfortunately going down the the quarter finals 15-8 against a very dynamic Elisabeth Powell (ENG) the eventual silver medalist.

Louis Jennings secured the top NZ spot in the Men's Cadet Epee. Placing 6th after defeating James Harwood (fellow kiwi who took out the 6th seed!) in the de16. Louis lost to eventual winner - Ben Schneider (ENG) 15-11.

Sheldon Ogilvie secured the 7th place spot in the Men's Cadet Epee by taking out the 2nd seed in the de16 in a nail biter 15-14. Going down the George Morris (WAL) in the qarter-final a close 15-13.

Another stand out performance was Brittany Wyatt in the Cadet Womens Epee. After a tough poule she was placed 24th and took out 9th seed 15-14. Next DE she took out 8th see 15-14. Getting through to the quarter finals and going down against the eventual silver medallist.

Mens Foil Team (Daniel Garelja, Felix Boyce, Daniel Keleghan, Nathanael Walker-Hale) all helped the effort and secured the team bronze medal. Seeding 4th they beat Scotland in a bold performance of their skill as a team. Followed by semi final defeat at the hands of the English (many lessons learned). Last up was the play off for third. A well supported victory against India lead NZ to their second consecutive Junior Mens Foil Team Medal.

There were many upsets, victories and defeats that all warrant applause and recognition. Everyone in the Team got out there and fenced their best, a special mention to the rest of the team who all made commendable personal achievements: Nicole Martin, James Harwood, Nick Henderson, Darya Kharitonova and Christine Chen.

Congratulations to the whole team on doing your country proud!

2015-06-18 19:03 - Urgent Equipment update Leon Paul Epee Blades, body wires
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZFurther clarification has been received regarding the FIE directive, relating to  2013 - 2015 Leon Paul epee blades type SR-1 with the V-profile.

These blades are not to be used in any fencing activity, effective immediately, until further notice. FeNZ has been advised that the blades may split, creating a high injury risk. This follows an incident recently.

The CFF Technical Commission has decided, in the best interest and for the safety of all our competitors, to follow suit and also disallow their use at the forthcoming CFF Junior-Cadet Championships in Cape Town, South Africa. Therefore be advised that no weapon bearing these blades will be accepted at weapon check.

Australia has also advised that these blades cannot be used.

BF blades supplied by Leon Paul are not affected.

Bayonet body wires. The issue of concern relating to this type of body wire is a technical one relating to wireless system use and is a technical issue only, not a safety issue.

Bayonet body wires can be used at Cape Town as wireless systems will not be used at this event.

Bayonet body wires can continue to be used in New Zealand, but any fencer competing overseas should be aware of the ruling, particularly for FIE competitions.

2014-06-18 13:13 - Refereeing - Are you interested in becoming a top referee?
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZAs part of its refereeing programme, FeNZ is looking for the next FIE referee in waiting.

FIE referees are needed as part of FeNZ's international obligations as well as helping to improve the standard of refereeing at domestic competitions.

Being an FIE referee is best suited to someone who is not a serious competitive fencer,  or no longer wishes to pursue competitive fencing. As an FIE referee you will have the opportunity to develop an alternative career in fencing, with the potential for overseas travel.

If you are interested in becoming our next FIE referee or even the one after that, let FeNZ know on secretary@fencing.org.nz.

Posted by Brillmartmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZWe are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Joyce Fenton, peacefully, Wednesday 15 January 2014 at Auckland Hospital after a short illness. Loved wife of Alan. The funeral service will be held at Purewa Cemetery and Crematorium on Thursday 23 January at 10.30am. In lieu of flowers donations to the SPCA would be appreciated.

Joyce was a New Zealand representative at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, in Kingston, Jamaica. With Gaye McDermot (Individual bronze) and Pam French they won the Women’s Foil Team Bronze. A supporter of fencing in Auckland, she would often visit the major championships with Alan. Fencing North’s “Fenton Epee Championship” bears their name.

We extend our sympathies and condolences to Alan and his family.

Fencing New Zealand Awards and Honours

Over the last 20 years a number of people have made valuable contributions to fencing at a National and International level. I believe that they merit consideration for recognition with FeNZ Award or Honour and/or potentially a National Honour (New Year/Queens Birthday).
There have been no Awards or Honours given in 20 years since the last award to David Grant-Taylor, a Life Membership for services to FeNZ as President.
In the current FeNZ By-laws, Section B, a panel of Life Members grants Service Awards, Distinguished Services Awards, Life Membership or Honorary Life Membership. This system clearly does not work.

Moved that:
I.That at the FeNZ AGM current By-laws concerning Awards (FeNZ By-laws, Section B dated 20 March 2010) are removed.
II.That responsibility for making Awards is taken by the FeNZ Executive Board.
III.After consideration of Award Nominees, the FeNZ Executive Board ongoingly grants Awards and Honours as appropriate.
                      Martin Brill / Kate Brill

8.General Business
    None received.

Please note that each region will set up a skype location where members can view and participate in the meeting. Check your regional website or contact your Regional President for details.

Your application should include a background to your club, its fencer mix, number of affiliated fencers, who is coaching the club and their level of experience, and most importantly how the club will use the equipment to boost numbers of fencers in the short, medium and long term.

We know that many of the clubs in smaller centres may not have experienced coaches and that is fine. It is about how you will build the numbers, take fencing into your community and promote the sport to more people, at any level, any age, any where.

The equipment includes 350N clothing and masks, non FIE electric weapons, bodywires, for sabre, foil, and epee. Clothing has FeNZ Development Programme markings. Equipment is on long term loan and remains the property of FeNZ.

Sizes are medium to large so will be suitable for mid-teens and older only.

Applications can be made to secretary@fencing.org.nz  or snail-mailed to FeNZ P O Box 28 056, Wellington.

Please include contact name and details.

Any queries, contact secretary@fencing.org.nz

2013-10-06 16:11 - FeNZ introduces the U23 age class
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZFeNZ is introducing the U23 age class ready for the 2014 fencing year.

The new class will be an incentive to fencers coming out of Juniors (U20) who are keen to continue competing.

An U23 Championship competition has been added to the 2014 FeNZ calendar, and regions will progressively introduce regional U23 events to their calendars. An U23 ranking list will also be introduced for 2014.

The U23 age class has been introduced on a trial basis by the FIE and the various Zone organisations, specifically to attract and retain this age group. The U23 events held around the world over the last couple of years have proven very popular and it is anticipated that they will become formal FIE events in the near future.

This year's Asian Zone U23 was held recently in Kuwait, with one New Zealander, Will Bishop, and a number of Australian fencers attending.

2013-10-02 23:02 - 2013 Veteran World Fencing Championships, Varna
Posted by Brillmartmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZ2013 World Veteran Champs

Update Sunday  6 Oct 2:35pm

Q. Where in the world is Varna?
A. Bulgaria

Congratulations to Fencing Mid South epeeist, Mark Rance (The Fencing Institute) who placed 26th out of 73 Veteran "A" (50+) starters. The pools were strong, with mixed results everywhere. Only 4 fencers from the 11 pools managed all victories, with one, two or three defeats being the norm. Mark qualified for the DE64 33rd seed (3V-3D). In a down to the wire bout he took the victory from 32nd seed Jan Bade (Finland) 10-9. in the DE32, Mark fenced top seeded Jan Tivenios (Sweden) but was over powered 6-10.

Mark's closest ranked Commonwealth fencer was Anton Pollard (GBR) at 40th. Once  again Mark, "Congratulations".

Also competing was our ex-New Zealand fencer Sarah Osvath, now fencing for Australia, who finished a commendable 9th place in the Women's Epee Veteran "A" (50+ with 36 fencers).

The individual weapon events are in veteran categories, A (50+), B (60+) and C (70+) and DE bouts are to 10 hits in 2 periods of 3 minutes. NZ does not have a team competing.

Japan's Naojiro Mitani (Men's Foil), aged just 81 and 8 months, squeaks in as the oldest competitor with several 80 year olds not far behind. Diane Austen competing for Britain in Women's Foil is the oldest women at a young 80.

We thank the Bulgarian Federation and Varna for hosting the Championships. To all competitors, officials and organisors,  "we are impressed and salute you all".

2013-09-09 18:26 - Intention to Nominate - Commonwealth Championships 2014
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZFencers intending to nominate for selection for the Commonwealth Championships in 2014 are invited to provide a copy of their training plans to assist the FeNZ selectors over the coming months.

Fencers are asked to send their training plans to secretary@fencing.org.nz before Christmas 2013.

There is no set format for training plans but it would be helpful if fencers could include their name, contact details, weapon/s, coach, competition plan and training regime.

Note: providing a plan is not a requirement for selection and submitting a plan or not, will not affect selection decisions in any way.

A copy of the FeNZ Selection criteria can be requested from secretary@fencing.org.nz

Posted by fencingsouthmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZThank you to all the athletes, officials, and helpers who made the inaugural President’s Cup what we hope was an enjoyable and successful event. A special thanks to our President, Mr Ken Claridge, for having such wonderful new trophies and medals especially commissioned for the event. The President’s Cup trophy for sportsmanship was awarded by popular vote to Richard Souness, who embodied the spirit that this trophy is intended to promote - he won with honour and he lost with dignity, and he was selfless in his willingness to assist the organisers and support his fellow athletes. Congratulations Richard.

2013-04-29 22:00 - NZ U15 / U17 (Cadet) Championships
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZFeNZ congratulates all the fencers on a very successful U15 and Cadet (U17) Championship held over the weekend in Christchurch.

Congratulations to all the new National Champions - there were some excellent performances. Congratulations also to the other medal winners, and there were several personal bests tucked in there, especially the younger fencers.

Well done to all of the fencers who participated. It is not easy to step up to this level of competition but all the fencers did very well.

FeNZ would like to thank all those who helped to make the competition a big success. Special thanks to Kate and Martin Brill, and their band of helpers... who are legion. Without you, the competition would not have run as smoothly and efficiently as it did.

A great venue, with or without the added extras that Christchurch can bring  (I counted two) a fire drill and a really good atmosphere.

Well done all. FeNZ looks forward to seeing you all at the next competition - North Island Champs in Wellington at Queen's Birthday.

FeNZ affiliation fees are used to run fencing in New Zealand, including providing equipment to regions, coach training, team support, referees and administrators that make the sport function. Posted by Brillmartmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZWai-Ling ChanAfter the first two days competition our fencers were finally on the piste for the 2013 Asian Cadet (Under 17) Championships:

A good performance from Sheldon Ogilivie in Men's Epee placed 19th out of 56 fencers (last year 23/50).

Another great event for Wai Ling Chan who fenced well and consistently, reaching the quarter final of the Women's Epee placing 6th out of 47 fencers (last year 5th/42).

Overall a great showing Kia Kaha!

Under the good coaching guidance of Daniel Chan they had a day off from competition, and took the opportunity to train with other countries fencers, then watching the teams events. Wednesday saw them have a  complete rest day to prepare for the beginning of the Junior Championship events starting Thursday.

2012-11-27 23:32 - Thank you - Thirty years ago today ...
Posted by Brillmartmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZA profound “thank you” to the Fencing community – the fencers, parents, friends and supporters -  those passionate and dedicated enough to coach it;  all those who’ve had the chance to learn it; those who’ve chosen to stay and develop their skills, some for many years; those who are willing to put in the hours to run the clubs, the national and regional bodies, the competitions, canteens and training camps; the selectors, referees…

Thanks to you and all of the people who came before  – we found each other 34 years ago.  Today we celebrated being married for 30 years – fencing has been interwoven into our lives throughout that time, never far from the forefront.  Wonderful experiences, people, encounters and memories.  Thanks!  Here’s to the future…

2011-07-29 23:07 - A Final Salute; Waimaria Erueti
Posted by Brillmartmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZIt is with great sadness we note the passing, too soon, of Waimaria Kirsten Erueti. Beloved mama of Kiwa; daughter of Evelyn Tuuta and the late Gabriel Kaperiera Erueti; sister of Mynetta and the late Aaron.

Waimaria fenced in Wellington with her formative coach, Lesley Calver.  Waimaria went on to  hold National Championship titles in Schools, Juniors and Senior Championships. She also represented New Zealand in Oceania, Commonwealth Teams and competed at the World Junior Championships (1986). She last competed at the 1999 National championships in her favourite event, epee. A respected role model for maori athletes, Waimaria lived her dream, loved fencing and gave everything, with all her heart.

FeNZCongratulations to our 2011 Junior Champions:
Mens Epee: Jurgens van Zyl (Gulf Harbour Fencing Club)
Womens Epee: Wai Ling Chan (The Fencing Institute)
Mens Foil: Hamish Chan (New Zealand Academy Fencing Club)
Womens Foil: Wai Ling Chan (The Fencing Institute)
Womens Sabre: Katie Logan (New Zealand Academy Fencing Club)
Men’s Sabre: Not contested due insufficient entries

Well done to all medalists and finalists and also to all the participants for making the event so special. From the “get-go” of the very first round it looked like being a tough event and sure enough there were lots of closely fought bouts.

“This was an exciting event and a thrilling Championship” said Ken Claridge, President of Fencing New Zealand.

A big thank you to our Tournament Controllers Brett Davis and Carla Campbell, Organisor Marguerite De Abaffy, all the referees and event assistants, and especially Carol McCance and Susie Messent for keeping the kitchen cooking.

2011-07-22 23:32 - President Ken Claridge Message for 2011 NZ Junior Champs, Christchurch.
Posted by Brillmartmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZFencing Mid-South is hosting one of the most important events in Fencing New Zealand’s calendar for 2011 – the NZ National Junior Championships.

This event is important for many reasons.  It is being held in Christchurch and follows on from the National Secondary Schools Competition, these events are the first to be held in Christchurch since the disastrous earthquakes, well done to Fencing Mid-South for their recovery to full working order.

This event is important for our Juniors, the Under 20 athletes too, as attendance and performance, up to a point, will be part of the consideration for the selection of athletes for the Junior Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2012 being held in Jersey next February, should the fencer nominate.

We are very lucky at the moment to be blessed with some outstanding U20 fencers whom we need to encourage and help to develop the sport in New Zealand well into the 21st century.  This will be an exciting event and I look forward to a thrilling Championship.

To all the competitors - Good luck and fence well!

Ken Claridge – President, FeNZ

2011-07-21 00:21 - NZ Secondary School Championships, Christchurch 20-22 July 2011
Posted by Brillmartmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZDay Three: The last day of the Secondary Schools Championships had just one national title being contested.

Congratulations to Katie Logan (Epsom Girl’s Grammar) on winning the Girl’s Sabre with Stephanie Alexander (Upper Hutt College) runner-up.

There were no Sabre Teams entered and the Boy’s Sabre title was not contested due to insufficient entries.

Congratulations to Upper Hutt College who made a clean sweep of the Best School Performance Awards for the Girl’s events. A hat trick was completed by adding the Best School Performance in Girl’s Sabre to their previous Best School Performances in Girl’s Foil and Epee.

“It was good to see a Girl’s Sabre event. A well deserved win by Katie Logan who showed a varied repertoire and a nice use of distance”, noted Kate Brill, Head of Referees.

Congratulations to all our Secondary Schools Champions and medalists. Thank you to all the participants, referees and supporters. Finally a very big thank you to Carla Campbell (Competition Controller) and Marguerite de Abaffy (Event Organisor) for ensuring the smooth running of these Championships. Well done.

2011-06-20 21:25 - NZ Secondary Schools and NZ Junior Championships, Christchurch
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (FeNZ)
FeNZUpdate for Christchurch.

Fencing Mid South and the competition organisers are confident they are able to hold the National Secondary Schools and Junior Championships safely and effectively with all appropriate measures in place. The venue, location and infrastructure can support the event. We are reviewing our risk management plan and FeNZ will be briefed on the plan.

We take this opportunity to point out that the western side of the city (areas not shown by TV reports), including the venue, surrounding area, approaches and airport, is relatively unaffected by the events of the last few months.

Fencers should also be aware that attendance at the relevant NZ Age Group Championship event is a prerequisite to competing in the associated Australian and Commonwealth Age group championships.

All fencers are encouraged to support their fellow fencers and stand with Christchurch at this time.

To the people of Christchurch and our fencing family in particular, Kia kaha!

Medalists: 1st Alessandro Bertolazzi (ITA), 2nd Adras Nemeth (HUN), 3rd= Romain Minaro (FRA) and Niels Acuti (FRA). 12 year old SHIKINO Takahiro of Japan produced an impressive performance placing 14th, as perhaps the highest placed young fencer in the Minimes Men’s Foil field. Another outstanding performance came in the Men’s Cadet event. Only 3 countries had fencers in the top 20. The USA cadet team took the first six places over all the highly rated European nations.
