2016-06-20 22:32 - Vale - Peter Anderson
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (General)
It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of Peter Andersen of Australia who has been our Commonwealth Fencing Federation Secretary-Treasurer since 2004. Peter passed away last Monday after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife Bridget, sons Paul & Sean (both talented former fencers) & their families.

He was a loyal & hardworking officer of the CFF & has remained active in the role until very recently. His continued dedication to his task up to recent days is truly inspirational and demonstrates Peter's resolve in the face of adversity.

I am sure many of us will miss our pleasant "pub crawls", his "tell it like it is", matter-of-fact counsel & his many jokes.

I will personally miss his advice, his efficiency as secretary & treasurer & his ‘mateship’.

I plan to attend the funeral & will pass on my condolences to his family, letting them know that Peter had, not only colleagues, but many friends on the Executive, as well as across the Commonwealth, who will remember him fondly.

Helen Smith

2015-10-01 17:33 - Chest Protectors - FIE Advice
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (General)
Please note the following advice from FIE relating to chest protectors, including the changed date for it to become operative and that this relates to FIE competitions.

Any implications for domestic competitions will be assessed and any changes needed will be posted and circulated.

In 2014, the FIE Congress adopted a modification of article m.25.4.c concerning chest protector. The SEMI Commission was in charge of defining the standard and testing procedure, which has been done. However, available prototypes still have to be tested on athletes.

Given that these tests are absolutely necessary, the Executive Committee has decided to postpone the use of the new chest protector. The latter will be compulsory starting with the 2016-2017 season.

2015-07-10 08:16 - News from Moscow
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (General)
Quick update from William Bishop who is at the FIE camp in Moscow leading up to World Championships..

The camp is being held at the CSKA training facilities in Moscow, where apparently most of their military athletes train. This explains all the people in uniform and the rows of bronze heads along the pathways.

The camp has about 60 fencers attending, most of them in epee, from all around the world. There are a lot of African, Central Asian and Central/South American fencers here, which means plenty of different styles to train against.

We're training in two blocks of two hours a day, plus warm up time, so there are a lot of bouts every day. Normally split into mens and womens groups so that the coaches can give lessons a bit more easily and the pool sheet doesn't have to be too long.

Would be interesting to fence some of the women's epeeists though, the Eastern Europeans seem like they're pretty strong on the blade.

Food is...........interesting.  A  zuccini, cabbage and egplant dish yesterday.

2014-02-14 13:40 - Olga Jekyll
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (General)
It’s with sadness that the Clarke family announces the death of Olga Jekyll, a doyen on New Zealand Fencing, aged 95.  The last nearly three years have been a challenge for Olga after having to leave her home following the February, 2011 Christchurch earthquake.  Living in a rest home and slowly losing independence didn’t suit one of the more independent minded individuals to grace a fencing piste and that was a frustration for her.  Failing health saw her admitted to hospital last week.  She died peacefully on Tuesday evening.

Olga’s involvement with fencing spanned over 70 years and her influence touched many people.  A fierce and successful competitor she was a four times National Champion, a National representative on a number of occasions, including the 1950 Empire Games, and a Life Member of the Association.

But it was as a coach and club administrator that she made her biggest impact giving the opportunity to literally thousands of people of all ages to experience our sport.  Many of those individuals went on to achieve National representation at age group and open level as a result of her encouragement and support.  She was also a founding member of the United Fencing Club.  Her commitment and achievement were recognised by the NZ Honours system with the award of a Queen’s Service Medal for Community Service, something Olga was rightfully very proud of.

Thanks to all of those who, over many years, gave her much pleasure and friendship as she pursued her passion for fencing.  There will be an opportunity to recognise Olga’s contribution to fencing at this year’s National Championships.

Aus Juniors*    Brisbane            27 – 30 September 2014
AFC #4     Canberra                    5 – 9 December 2014
State age group events - various

International
Asian Cadet/Juniors*    Jordan         7 – 16 March 2014
World Cadets/Juniors*    Bulgaria            3 – 12 April 2014
Asian Seniors*            Korea        2 – 7 July 2014
World Champs*        Russia        15 – 23 July 2014
Asian U23*                Indonesia            ? October 2014
World Veterans        Hungary            21 – 26 October 2014
Commonwealths*            Scotland    10 – 15 November 2014
Commonwealth Vets    Scotland    16 – 19 November 2014

There are also many competitions in the Asia/Pacific region that can be entered, with no selection required. For younger fencers the age specific events such as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong or the US are good events to gain international experience without too much travel.

For FIE events, name, country code and ferns on clothing, FIE compliant equipment and an FIE licence are required. Name, country code and ferns and FIE licence are not generally required for domestic competition in most countries, however for Australia and some other countries FIE standard equipment is. If competing outside New Zealand, name and country code on clothing can be helpful.
