FIE Approved equipment: There is some confusion regards the validity and date which is on the on the FIE labels.
The date on the FIE label is the date the FIE approved the manufacturer’s equipment for use in FIE events. It is not the date of manufacture. The FIE rules require a manufacturer to have each equipment product line which has been approved retested twice in the five years after approval in order to retain the FIE approval for that product. Any change in the product’s specifications results in it being considered to be a new product and requires a new approval.
For fencers, there is no “limit of validity” or “specified duration” for use of equipment carrying the approved FIE label. Equipment such as jackets, trousers, plastron, mask and blades, used for example at FIE events, must all have the FIE label visible, irrespective of date on the label. Also all equipment, at all competitions, irrespective of it having an FIE label or not, must conform to the rules for the event and the “on the piste” conditional testing carried out by the referees and weapon control.
